Savitri's journey runs across crowded cities, forts, gardens and temples. During nights she rests in the palaces on the route. Then she comes into the countryside where Nature is fresh, not yet peopled with human cares and joys. She feels the closeness of the Earth and hears her inarticulate voice. Her nature is in communion with her Maker. King-sages come to share in her happy peace after their life of strife and labour. Some retire into the recesses of the soul and realise oneness with the world. Some break through the walls of the mind and soar into the heights of the Spirit from where Truth leans down on them. Ascetics sit in concentration waiting upon the Immutable and the Ineffable. Seers tune themselves to the universal Will and lie content in God. Sages breathing freedom and joy assist the entry of gods on earth, teach the young to think and live high. Their presence, even their silence is of help to earth. Some, who go beyond the confines of thought, bring back to earth Force and Light from Beyond. Some watch as witnesses from their Silence, some disappear into the Vast. Savitri journeys through all these retreats, halts in the hermitages during nights or rests in the open, on the banks of rivers, in solitary tracts, in desert spaces. But still the quest is not accomplished.

The air is full of longing and expectation, Aswapati hears the subtle voice of unborn Powers. There are other realms of existence and there is a light behind life. Immortal Powers await to embody themselves. The Voice ceases. And as if in answer from the gods Savitri comes to Aswapati in all her revealing beauty and splendour. Aswapati's physical sense withdraws and he sees behind the outer form of Savitri, the great and unknown Spirit born as his child. Moved from unseen Heights he speaks to her and tells her he who is to be her partner and companion in the journey of life, waits for her. With him she shall confront Heaven's question, life. These words sink into her being like a Mantra and the seed of change is sown. She awakes in her consciousness to new dimensions and the secrets of unseen realms are felt close. Before the dawn of the next day, Savitri leaves on her quest.

Great influences and ancient Godheads watch over the child Savitri as she grows up in a land of beauty, grace and grandeur. Her environment is rich in the fields of philosophy, sculpture, architecture, music, painting, dance, poetry, crafts, science. She assimilates their essence but feels their inadequacy and seeks to realise the larger and higher glories waiting to manifest. Few respond to her call and fewer still feel her divinity. They adore her, cling to her, but they cannot rise to her heights. None is there who can stand up her equal and mate. But there is a growing sense of expectation in the air. She is admired and adored from afar. None can stand up her equal. She has to remain alone till her hour of fate arrives.

The seasons weave a picturesque dance in the Earth's ceaseless motion around the Sun. Seasons follow one after the other. In them the Mother-Wisdom in Nature works to urge the growth of consciousness and joy in life, to make Matter conscious of its divinity. That Will now puts on an earthly form in Savitri. A Power within her shapes her sense in a deeper mould. She is one with a greater Nature. Her mind, life and body are constantly in evident preparation for the emergence of the inner Godhead. Her aspiration is ever active calling down the high destiny, her life one stream of Joy, Beauty, Love, Light.

Yes, one shall descend who will break the iron Law and change Nature's Doom by the Spirit's Power. A seed shall be sown in some tremendous hour of Death, a branch of heaven transplanted to human soil and Nature shall overleap her mortal step.

Aswapati becomes aware of an ocean of oneness. A new creation arises from this oneness. Form reveals its inner truth. Struggle is strife of love. Difference and identity are mutually supporting. Bliss is the undying truth of all, Nature a conscious front of God, Wisdom works securely everywhere, Love and ecstasy are unbroken. In this creation Aswapati sees himself a portion of the universal gaze, a centre of the pervading light. He sees a hierarchy of luminous planes, all attuned to one Truth Bliss seeks for forms to manifest the divine truths. A vast Truth-Consciousness takes up these forms and releases them into manifestation in Time.

Aswapati’s seekings are fulfilled in the Divine Mother. He realises, however, that his single freedom cannot satisfy him. He asks for Her light and bliss for all earth and men. He is aware that his own strength is inadequate for this purpose and he surrenders all of himself to Her so that Her vast Power can act and fill the finite with the Infinite, bring Her healing touch of Love, Truth and Joy into the suffering world. He gives his freed soul to her and her alone.

Aswapati sees the splendour of the Spirit's kingdoms—the glory of the One as All. All forms are shapes of the Spirit, all forms are outbursts of the Spirit's truth. He passes on and sees the Powers that preside over the world. Knowledge calls him to her peaks. An all-revealing Light leads him to the regions of transcendent Truth where Time and Space are seen in their true nature as self-extensions and self-durations of the Spirit. The Beauty and Harmony of Creation unveil themselves to his vision. He beholds the play of Inspiration, Revelation and Intuition. He has reached the top of all that can be known and only the last Mystery is left. Aswapati is new-born in this Kingdom of the Spirit's power and light. His Knowledge grasps the Unfathomable, embraces all without segmentation. He studies the secrets of the Overmind region. He is in tune with the supernal harmonies and links up in his consciousness the creation and the Eternal's sphere. He wields the Cosmic Force.

Beyond the regions of Mind Aswapati is in spaces of the World-Soul. There he is led by a sound made of many sounds, of flute-call, cricket-note, anklet-bells, caravan-tinkle, temple-gong, bee-croon, sea-wave. In this world are transmuted Nature's movements into their divine terms. All here is made of soul-stuff. Here rest all beings after death on earth and before they take the next embodiment. They assimilate their life-experiences and prepare for their future lives. Beyond are regions of delight and peace. Aswapati becomes aware of the immortal Two-in-One whose rapturous trance sustains the mobile world. Behind it stands the Divine Mother, the all-pervading Power, she effecting all with her Will. He is overwhelmed by her light and bliss. With a cry of adoration, he falls at her feet, unconscious, prone.

Aswapati arrives at an abrupt Silence where the climbing stair of the worlds pauses. He stands alone with an immense Self of Mind which is omnipotent but aloof from the world that has sprung from it. It does not participate in all the movements in this world but bears them equally. Aswapati reflects this vast quietism. This witness Silence is the real base of the Thinker and the origin of the Word. Here meet the seeing Self and the potent Energy and creation ensues.

Awakened Thought leaves the boundaries of the known to scale the peaks of the unknown. It longs for the unrealised Truth, the Light that is above birth and death. Each stage of its ascent reveals a new world of wonder and bliss. At either end of the effulgent stair Aswapati sees the heavens of the ideal Mind. On one side are worlds of undying Bliss, the Kingdoms of the deathless Rose. All that is in these higher worlds of sweetness and Bliss is there incipient in mortal life. It awakens and grows by the touch of the divine Breath which visits the earth time and again. On the other side of the stair are great realms of luminous Knowledge, the Kingdoms of the deathless Flame. The unquenchable flame of Knowledge mounts up from the altar of the Mind aspiring to reach the absolutes of the Being. Its worlds of ascent are great in proportion, bright and mighty. They constantly pull the human soul upwards to their heights. Their peaks point to some distant Splendour of the Truth Infinite.

Aswapati crosses beyond the limits of the human mind into the regions of a vaster transcending Thought. This higher Thought is allied to a Vision facing the Spirit Eternal. On these peaks are seen the glories of the Ideal Mind. This Ideal Mind is the source and inspirer of all the great hopes and movements on earth. It is the bridge between man and God. In this world dwell the Gods who are the forms taken by the truths of the Spirit. Here are the Truth-Ideas that prefigure creation below. Their light and influence touches the human world and moves it to greater effort. The source of human faith in progress and perfection lies here. However, the eternal Truth cannot be seized by thought or by word. Thought has to yield to Vision and surrender to the supreme Truth.

There are three gradations of the Mind-Power: the physical mind, the life or desire-mind, the reasoning mind. Of these the first is the mechanical mind ever exposed to its habitual grooves of movement, inert, unchanging, repetitive, limited to physical forms and senses. This has its role in creation: to fix things in type. All movement, all new influx, is arrested and reduced by this power to its own established pattern. Next comes the desire-mind, ever on the move, claiming everything as food for its hunger. Imaginative, adventurous, impulsive, it is never satisfied, never content with what is gained. It darts forth in force and often catches what calm intelligence would miss. Instinct and intuition play a good part in its action. The last and the greatest of these powers is Reason.

Aswapati is in the Paradise of Life-gods. There is joy without grief or fear; there beauty and bliss are calm and luminous. He hears notes of celestial music chanting the glory of Love. All around is ocean of felicity. The Yogi is immersed in that experience and even his physical body is able to bear it. It purifies him and turns his mortal strength to undying power.

In his luminous vision Aswapati sees an invisible Hand of the Spirit laid upon error and pain which turn into ecstasy at that touch. He sees clearly that Night is only a veil of the Eternal, death a process of Life, destruction a rapid step of Creation, hell a short cut to the gates of Heaven. The Illusion of the Nether Absolute is dissipated. All on Earth reveals its divine significance. Life comes into its own pure action in the physical embodiment. Hell collapses. Division ceases to be, God is present. The soul lights up the conscious body and Matter and Spirit become one.

With a calm mind and detached heart, Aswapati seeks to find the cause of the world-failure he has just experienced and penetrates the surface view of Nature. He sees in the depths below the fount of Pain and the black pit of Ignorance and Evil. He espies a dark Nescience looking up at this Creation, a hidden Power of Doom and Death beneath all life. He observes a fatal influence creeping forth and stamping itself upon all created existence, corrupting and perverting everything in it. A deformation comes over all being. A sorrow breathes over the world. Beings of Evil arrive and erect the frame of sin and adverse Fate. The whole appearance and character of Life undergoes a change. Beauty, Love, Light yield to ugliness, lust, darkness. Ego thrives, falsehood usurps the place of Truth, Knowledge is displaced by Ignorance.

To manifest the Divine Reality was the mission with which Life was charged. But her performance has lagged behind her objective. She is not permitted to cease from her labours and she must endure, strive and move on. Life and the soul within her have no respite from the march. Each goal points to the next. Behind all effort, there is a memory of the lost glory and beyond all failures, there is a Splendour that beckons. Life is perpetually in toil to realise her dream. There is an abiding faith that a time must come when the Divine will respond to her Call and manifest His Verities of Truth, Beauty, Love and Bliss in Life's creations and restore her to her true immortal state. Till then her labours must continue, however vain, however fruitless they may seem and though her world appear a pointless mistake of the gods.

The hunger of the life-force is added to the hunger of the earth and there is a great unrest which expresses itself as a ceaseless craving in men. With the advent of life all repose is gone. Man is seized with desire. And because he is unhappy, he aspires, he seeks and progresses. He explores life without, turns to explore it within. When Life enters Matter she exerts pressure and compels the unconscious Force in Matter to emerge. There is a general awakening and sensation comes to be. Instinct guides the movement. Life brings the compulsion to move and to grow, and spreads herself slowly searching to realise her innate bliss which she has lost here.
